GRIT (Growing Rural Independence Together)

GRIT (Growing Rural Independence Together) is a workforce development initiative that helps people in rural Appalachian Ohio find stable jobs and financial independence. Available to Tuscarawas County residents, it helps build a clear path toward stable, meaningful employment.

This work is important because it helps individuals identify career opportunities they may not have considered while connecting them to the education, training and employers that can help them move forward. At the same time, GRIT helps strengthen the local workforce by connecting residents with high-demand careers and local employment opportunities.

GRIT serves Tuscarawas County residents who are exploring career options, changing careers, looking for new opportunities or seeking a path to more stable employment. Participants are supported by OhioMeansJobs Stark & Tuscarawas Counties career specialists, who help them understand their assessment results, explore career options and develop an individualized plan.

The program also connects participants with local employers, workforce training providers, education opportunities and other resources that can help them reach their career goals.

One thing people may not realize is that GRIT is much more than a career assessment or job-search program. Participants receive ongoing, one-on-one support from a career coach who helps them turn their assessment results into an actual career plan. That plan can include employment, training, certifications, internships or education, depending on what makes sense for the individual.

One of the biggest successes of GRIT is its ability to help individuals move from uncertainty to action. Rather than simply pointing people toward available jobs, the program helps participants understand their strengths, identify careers that fit them and create a personalized path forward.

By connecting individuals with local opportunities, training and support, GRIT has the potential to create a lasting impact—not only by helping residents achieve greater independence and career stability, but by helping local employers build the skilled workforce they need.
