Meet the Board: Sarah Spies

I was hired as the executive director of the United Way of Tuscarawas County in June of 2024. The mission of “mobilizing the community to action so all can thrive” spoke to me as a lifelong resident of Tuscarawas County. I know firsthand how important it is to support the families and students in our community so that we all can succeed. The United Way has four pillars of community support: financial security, healthy community, youth opportunity, and community resiliency. We focus on each of these pillars by providing financial support to several partner agencies and programs, as well as direct service programs. We are the local program partners for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, we provide Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, and we provide 211 crisis support to Tuscarawas County.

The United Way had a member serving on the Workforce Development Board prior to my coming on as Executive Director, and I am excited to take her place and serve on the Board! My previous work was in education, which is a key part of our workforce development efforts. I think it’s essential for our students and families to have an understanding of upcoming industries and for them to be well-educated in fields that will continue to grow throughout the next several decades.

I moved from the education world to the nonprofit world. Education is definitely the challenge I’m most passionate about! Our students have gone through their K-12 education in a period of time where technology has been evolving faster than ever before. Between social media and AI, so many industries look vastly different from how they did 20 years ago. Our students need to be prepared to operate in that world while maintaining their critical thinking and literacy skills, along with science and technology.

I am very involved in the arts in Tuscarawas County! I formerly served on the Tuscarawas Arts Partnership and Little Theatre of Tuscarawas County boards, and I’m still a member of the Tuscarawas Philharmonic board. I direct the musical every spring at New Philadelphia High School, and I try to get onstage or backstage at the Little Theatre when I’m able!
